Driven to Tri Swim Camp
Training, Coaching May 4th, 2007Driven to Tri held there first swim camp in Bath on the 21st and 22nd of April below is my 100m swim video analysis. I’m going to see if anyone wants to leave a comment on my stroke technique, which it has to be said is a little unorthodox. I’ll do my own analysis once other people have had a chance to critique. Don’t hold back, i’m a big boy, I can take it.

I know you can swim fast because I’ve seen you, but how on earth do you do it…? What happened to all that stuff about high elbows and smooth entry! It gives me hope though, because it means there is no right way! Hope things go well for you this season, all the best. Kim & Barbara

You have a very propulsive part (last 30cm) durin the stroke, mainly with right hand.Straight arm swing is useful in openwater swim, plus wetsuit swim.3rdly your body position with the right timing of your kicking allows you swim fast(and powerful).Any further technique corrections may help you save energy, mainly during calm circumstances (like:1st, 2nd,3rd swim position during triswim, flat water surface…).

As ever swimming is one thing most age group triathletes really do struggle to come to terms with.
Your “unorthodox” style does give me hope of one day cracking the swim.
I too am beginning to find a better technique and more relaxed swimming by “throwing” my arm over and forwards rather than the “high” elbow slicing into the water which if your not very flexible through the shoulders is nigh on impossible to do without becoming very tired very quickly. I’ve watched with great interest, good OW swimmers and most of them do display the high straighter arm recovery that can be seen in the video above.

I’m a tri newbie year and have been struggling with swimming for a couple of years. I looked at countless videos trying to swim the “correct” way with no luck. I saw your technique on YouTube and tried it out a few days ago. I think your technique is right for me! I definitely feel faster and more at home in the water. Thanks!
